Te project marked North America’s first transition from diesel to electrified passenger rail. Te project’s complexity centered around the integration of a 25kV AC
Overhead Catenary System, which required the installation of two traction power substations, one switching substation, and seven paralleling substations. Tese components had to be precisely engineered and constructed within a densely populated urban corridor. Balfour Beatty achieved this through meticulous planning and innovative construction techniques, such as using a self-propelled wire train to install OCS wires at unprecedented speeds. Te team embraced a solutions-first approach that prioritized transparency, ac-
countability, and shared success, and Partnering played a pivotal role. Delivered without a single claim, the project showcases what’s possible when all stakeholders are aligned. Also selected as finalists in the “Heavy Civil $100 Million and Over” category
were Granite Construction Company for “LAX North Airfield Exit Taxiways Project (NAET)" and Griffith Company for “Rail to Rail Active Transportation Corridor – Segment A.” Finalists in the “Excellence in Partnering” category includ- ed Granite Construction Company, also for the “NAET” project, and Shimmick Construction for “301 Mission Perimeter Pile Upgrade.”
