Chamber’s enduring role: Building a better Culpeper T e Culpeper County Chamber of


Commerce has long been a network of local leaders working together to better their community. T roughout Culpeper’s rich modern history, we can fi nd stories of defi ning local eff orts through the Chamber that brought unity and diversifi ed industries — setting the stage for the community’s growth and today's success. Culpeper played a signifi cant role


during the Civil War, and the community paid greatly for it. With the loss of human life as the most devastating consequence, the confl ict also leſt Culpeper's economy decimated. Buildings had been destroyed and, due to the winter encampment of the Union army in 1863-64, forests had also been cleared, leaving the town without vital resources needed to rebuild. Confederate currency had been used


before the war, leaving residents’ money worthless aſt er the confl ict ended. Crops and farming had been leſt on the wayside


1863-64 During the winter occupation of Culpeper County, Union troops felled most trees for fi rewood and hut-building timber.
