started out as Culpeper Memorial Hospital in March 1960, thanks to the local Jaycettes’ fundraising eff orts. T e Jaycettes were an amazing and focused group of women who wanted to have a community hospital where they could have their babies. T e hospital started as a one-story facility with 40 beds that were slow to fi ll up. When the hospital fi rst opened,


segregation still lingered. Helen Grayson was the fi rst African American licensed practical nurse hired in 1960. At that time, there were thirteen medical surgical rooms,

and of those rooms, two were dedicated to Black patients. T e staff also took breaks in segregated rooms. As Culpeper has evolved, the hospital has made impressive advances for the people of Culpeper, especially by using technology to improve the overall care and effi ciency of the services they provide.

has integrated robotic-assisted surgery with the Da Vinci Surgical System. It is directly controlled by surgeons and allows them to perform certain procedures with smaller incisions and better visualization than would otherwise not be possible. T ey also unveiled a linear accelerator,
