Flow with Tim Hurley by Miriam Lucero T

im Hurley is a singer/ songwriter out of Playa del Rey, California. In 2014 Tim was discovered sing- ing Karaoke at a local bar and just two months later was performing onstage for the first time, opening for John Michael Montgomery at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. After a tremendous reception, he decided to pursue a career in music.

Originally from the East Coast, Tim was raised on a variety of musical genres, but in college, the songwriting and lyrics in country music won him over. Tim gets inspiration from artists like George Strait, Zac Brown and, Kenny Chesney. He combines ‘feel good’ melodies with thoughtful lyrics in what he likes to describe as ‘Coastal Country’.

Tim and his band have shared the stage with Joe Nichols, Kane Brown and Lindsay Ell and have been head- lining and performing at festivals, fairs and events all over the western United States.

My husband and I have seen you in concert a couple of times, and always enjoy your show

and sound! Explain the Coastal Country sound that you have? How was that developed? I think it is important to write songs about what you know, and to tell a story that helps the audience relate to me as a person.

I live in beach

town and love the community in the area. A lot of our songs are about the beach lifestyle and we try to take the audience on a little vacation with every show.

Tell our readers about your band? They’re really excellent players. How did you get started in the music business? I was actually “discovered” singing karaoke at a bar a few hundred yards away from my house. I was put in touch with a songwriter out in El Paso. By chance, he was booked to open for John Michael Mont- gomery at Fort Bliss a month later. He gave me the opportunity to perform at that show. So the first time I EVER performed with a band of any kind, or on a stage of any size, it was that show, performing in front of thousands of people. I caught the music bug in a big way and never looked back. I am fortunate to have a great band behind me- we are like family. Steve Neino on the guitar, Riley Flanagan on the drums and Greg Rosales on the bass.

I listen to “Flow” a lot and like the feel, it has feel good melo- dies. What is the inspiration behind the song? “Flow” is just a fun song about a summer day in our little beach town, Playa del Rey. I thought about my friends as I was writing the tune and what a typical Saturday afternoon looks like for us in the summer. Steve Neino, wrote the melody and it just had that fun, beach vibe to it. We love performing this tune!

Without giving away destinations. Do you have a favorite place to write music? Are you recording in Nashville, TN or California? Who is your producer? I actually write the majority of the lyrics to these songs when I am on a plane. I have no clue why, but for some reason, as soon as we are wheels up, the lyrics just race into my mind. We recorded a few demo tunes in Nashville and will definitely be going back. It truly is music city and the resources, talent and enthusiasm in Nashville is second to none!

I have noticed that you always give quality time to your fans. Anything you want to say to them?

I LOVE hanging out with our fans. When we play a live show, the fans are just as important

to the show as we are. If we are all on the same page and feeling the same energy in the room, the night becomes magical. There is nothing better to me, than meeting someone after a show that we were able to move in some way. Whether they connected with lyrics, an emotion or simply just made them forget about work for a night!

What is on the horizon for Tim Hurley? Albums? Tours? It’s crazy, but we are already booked for shows into next summer.

I

will also be spending a lot more time in Nashville. I will be collaborat- ing with songwriter and labels and the goal is, to get signed in 2018.

Music influences, music hero? Any Country artists or artists that you would like to collaborate with? Kenny Chesney is my number 1 as a performer. Nobody brings ener- gy to a show like Kenny and I absolutely use his influence in how we craft our shows.

complain! George Strait is also a huge influence to me.

If he asked me to come on tour with him, I wouldn’t I love his

songs and his delivery. They tell a story and I think that is fundamen- tal in country music.

Favorite song? Why? My favorite song that I wrote is called “Feeling.” It is a very real song and I wrote it about a very specific moment in my life. When I sing it, I go back to that place and it triggers this raw emotion that I think translates on stage.

“Better as a memory” that was written by Holly Gleason and per- formed by Kenny Chesney is one of my all-time favorites.

It is so

beautifully written, like poetry. It is a subject that I can relate to personally and I find it so powerful.

We saw you at The Big Sting, Its A Country Thing. Are you coming back next year? I saw you’re scheduled for Country Thunder in Cadot, Wisconsin. I’ve been, always a great time!

ABSOLUTELY! Vicki Burton from KAFF Country in Flagstaff invited us back. She has been such a great advocate for us, and has also be- come a friend. We are proud to be helping the Shadows Foundation and to be part of a great festival.

February Issue theme is “Heart Healthy for You and Your Hors- es”, any healthy habits? Favorite Love song? I try to get a workout in every day. But I’m not a big health fanatic.

I

could probably stand to pay more attention to my diet, but that is tough when we are on the road! My favorite love song is “Can’t take my eyes off of you” by Lady Antebellum. If you haven’t heard it- go listen. NOW!
