Terra Bella by Miriam Lucero
Tell our readers about your music? “Before You”? How you two met? We are Joseph and Martina Costa, a husband and wife coun- try duo called “Terra Bella” originally from Central California. We’ve been singing together almost 9 years and have been married 6. We actually met on Myspace while Martina was searching for free guitar lessons, looking to take her karaoke career to the next level (haha true story.) “Before You” is our most current single and the first song we’ve released off our upcoming album. It was written by Joe and our good friend Robert Williford. It’s a song about how a special someone can change your life for the better.
You both moved to Nashville, TN from California, how has the transition been for both of you? The transition has been great, but definitely a huge change for us. In California we lived on a farm with only 1 neighbor for miles and miles, in TN we live in a neighborhood. It was the first time in Joe’s life he didn’t live on a farm. There’s also the weather, specifically the humidity and the colder winters which was a bit of a change, but nothing we couldn’t handle.
You both have a ranching, rodeo, and farming back- ground. Tell our readers about your ranch, rodeo life, and farming background?
32 FEBRUARY / MARCH 2018 I HORSE & AG MAGAZINE
Joe: I come from a family that has been farming in Central California for over 100 years. My first job was working on the farm for my dad and the last job I had before moving to Nashville was working on the farm. My dad still grows corn, wheat, alfalfa, and cotton. My grandpa also raised Quarter Horses on the ranch and did quite well showing halter. Along with the farm chores I also helped him halter break horses, prep them for shows and eventually showed a few times for him. Martina: I grew up in a place called Wonder Valley which is a 700 acre spread nestled in the foothills of Central California that has a working dude ranch/re- sort at the heart of it. It was there that I had my 1st job as a trail guide and also gave basic horsemanship lessons to the summer camp kids who came in from all around the world. I have been showing horses for as long as I can remem- ber. My mama is the one who got me hooked, as she also showed. I competed at local and regional levels in 3-Day eventing, western pleasure, barrel racing and gymkhana. I competed for Squaw Valley rodeo queen for 2 years and won in 2005. I’m a proud alumni and lifetime member of the FFA. Terra Bella has even played the CA FFA State Conference 2 times.. How cool is that?
Both of you’re on the road together, how do you balance your road life to home life? We’ve been doing it so long that it’s become our routine. Balance is key, how- ever, we don’t really have any other sort of strategy set out for it to
work...it just does. We consider ourselves very blessed to be able to work together and spend the rest of our lives together!
I noticed in your bio that you have joined the songwriting community of Nashville, TN how has that experience helped in your music? Being a part of a group that has the same goals has been really inspiring. Having friends that you can throw ideas at and co-writing can take a song to another level. We are constantly learning from collaborating and that is prob- ably the #1 reason why we just had to move to Nashville.
