Go Live Your Life by Miriam Lucero I
n 1994 you were signed to Columbia Records, with your de- but album “Old Enough to Know Better”, you were among the fast rising stars in Country Music. Who was the first person you called that you had been signed? Was the song written with truths to how you were living at the time? Ð That was the most wonderful time of my life. I was just a kid from rural Okla- homa and everything was new and exciting. The first people I called were my folks of course. I grew up building houses with my dad so naturally I got a job immediately building homes in Nashville. I also got a job very quickly playing lead guitar for Johnny Lee at night so “Old Enough to Know Better” was writ- ten from a very personal place. That’s exactly what was going on at the time.
You write most of your songs, and being that Nashville is a singer/songwriter town. What inspired you to write back then, and what inspires you to write now? Where do you write your songs? Back when I first moved to Nashville I had been dabbling in writing, and had written a lot of my second number 1 (song), “I’m Still Dancing With You” already. It was essential to be writing your own stuff back then, as I had also gotten a publishing deal with Sony Tree. My mentor was my dear friend Chick Rains who had written many hits. These days I write primarily because I enjoy it. Back then it was more work. I do most of my writing these days while I’m out mowing the pasture. I love it there- very peaceful.

You have that traditional story teller voice, with exception- al tone. There is a lot of singers out there, but you really paint the story in your songs. Where does that come from? How did you develop that style? I was always drawn to sing- er/songwriters. I loved Merle, Waylon, and Willie etc. I was al- ways into the song-lyrics and the musicianship. I have never been into the wild rope swinging business. The live show to me is and always will be about the song. I guess that’s where my style came from.
Any of today’s current Country Artists that you would like to collaborate with on recording a song? Musical heroes? You performed with the Nashville All Stars recently, awesome by the way! Do you perform often with them? I do not perform with the All Stars often, but would like to. There are a couple new artists I like a lot and would like to perform with. A new group called Midland, young artist William Michael Morgan, Easton Corbin, and Maren Morris. My heroes are Merle, Willie, Waylon, Gary Stewart, Gene Watson, and Don Williams.
You have an album “Go Live Your Life” which was a state- ment from Dr. Jordan Berlin. How are you living your life today? What advice do you give to someone that has just been diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer? Yes, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in 2011, and given very little chance of survival. I credit God almighty for sparing my life and thank
