PNT 110 Fundamentals of Nursing. This course introduces the student to the patient’s basic human needs and provides the student with the necessary principles to meet those needs. Students learn concepts and theories basic to the art and science of nursing. The role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team is emphasized. The student is presented with basic communication skills necessary to develop effective interpersonal relationships. The nursing student explores issues in nursing care using evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills. The ethical and legal responsibilities of the practical nursing student are integrated throughout the course. Providing safe, individualized basic nursing care to promote optimal self-care for the patient is emphasized through the concepts of the nursing process. Concurrent: PNT 112. 4 credit hours.
PNT 112 Fundamentals of Nursing Lab. This course provides the student with essential psychomotor nursing skills needed to meet basic human needs. This course provides opportunities to develop competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Skills necessary for maintaining microbial, physical, and psychological safety are introduced along with skills needed in therapeutic interventions. To complete this course, students must demonstrate competency in performing the learned basic nursing skills. Concurrent: PNT 110. 4 credit hours.
PNT 115 Medication Calculation and Administration, and IV Therapy. This course is designed to prepare the student to read medication labels and accurately calculate oral and parenteral dosages and solutions. The content includes basic math review, systems of measurement, and methods of medication administration and calculation for clients throughout the lifespan. Concepts relating to critical thinking, logical thinking, and the nursing process are presented throughout the course. The importance of integrating patient education about medications into the client’s treatment plan as well as a description of the nursing process and its relationship to medication administration are emphasized. A minimum of thirty (30) hours will be focused on intravenous fluid therapy where students will be taught to perform limited intravenous fluid therapy treatment utilizing the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to perform such therapy safely and in accordance with the current effective Missouri Rule 4 CSR 200.6010. Concurrent: PNT 118. 5 credit hours.
PNT 118 Medication Calculation and Administration, and IV Therapy Lab. This course provides opportunities to develop competencies in medication administration and intravenous therapy skills in a safe, legal, and ethical manner utilizing the nursing process. Students must complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of clinical practice, which must include no less than one (1) actual initiation of intravenous fluid therapy on a person under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor designated by the sponsoring agency. Concurrent: PNT 115. 1 credit hour.
PNT 125 Nutrition. This course focuses on the introduction to basic principles of nutrition in relation to the human body. Nutrient and food guides for health promotion are identified. The importance of nutrition for prevention of disease processes and maintenance of health across the lifespan is presented. Examination of diet therapy within disease processes are integrated throughout the course. Prerequisites: PNT 145, PNT 165, PNT 210, PNT 215, and ASC 106 with a grade of “C” or better. 3 credit hours.
PNT 135 Geriatric Nursing. This course will focus on the changing social and economic roles of the elderly and the holistic needs of the aging client in the healthcare system. Major topics include the normal process of aging, and the physical and social needs of the elderly. The altered pharmacological effects with the geriatric client are studied. Prerequisites: PNT 145, PNT 165, PNT 210, PNT 215, and ASC 106 with a grade of “C” or better. 2 credit hours.
