EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Student Chapters in the association, while they are in school and beyond. Trough their participation at statewide conferences, District Board meetings and events, and engaging with the local and statewide CLC, AGC Student Chapter members have gained invaluable networking opportunities and pride in AGC membership. With support and participation from companies like yours, AGC and CEF workforce development programs and the CLC are building the next generation of construction industry leadership – young and skilled leadership that your company is going to need in short order.

Hensel Phelps’ Hadi Joudi Finds Participation Key to Success By Carol Eaton

When Hadi Joudi began attending college at CSU Long

Beach in 2009, he already knew that a good education is just one component of building a successful career. Joudi, who had switched paths from running his own event planning and management business to pursue a new career in construction management, knew that industry connections and involvement are also essential to business success. Armed with that knowledge, he joined the AGC Student Chapter at Long

Beach and began attending Chapter meetings “to witness first-hand what the more senior students were making a fuss about” – and quickly saw the value in the AGC Student Chapter’s mission. “I not only saw value, I wanted to enhance and communicate that value on

behalf of the Chapter to other fellow students, which then led me to take on multiple roles as a board member,” Joudi says. “Trough the Chapter, I was exposed to industry mixers and regional/national AGC conferences. I was constantly meeting people and building valuable professional relationships that I still value until today.” Joudi’s active involvement in AGC helped him secure an internship

with Hensel Phelps by the end of his first semester. It ultimately led to a job offer from the company well ahead of graduation in May 2015, when he earned his B.S. in Construction Engineering Management with a minor in Entrepreneurship. Joudi started at Hensel Phelps full-time in May 2014 working on the

Terminal 1 Modernization Program at LAX project, which he continues to work on now as a field engineer. As a young professional, he continues to be engaged with AGC of California as a member of the CLC – a direct result of his positive Student Chapter experience. “Seeing the measurable results of my active involvement with the Student

Chapter is a direct motivator to maintaining involvement with the CLC today,” Joudi says. “Te CLC bridges communication between young profes- sionals and students, providing better practices for both. Students can relate to young professionals within the CLC to learn more about what’s out there, and young professionals can gain a better understanding of how students are developing to relay feedback for guidance – an excellent win-win!” Since joining CLC in 2015, Joudi has participated in numerous events

including golf tournaments, student chapter corn hole competitions, the Legends and Leaders Dinner and the widely regarded Construction Leadership Conference. He stepped up to take a leadership role, currently serving on the CLC Steering Committee. Hensel Phelps has long been a strong proponent of the CLC and

encourages its employees to stay engaged in AGC, according to Executive Vice President Jon Ball. “Participation in CLC is so beneficial to our employees! Not only do they gain a broader understanding of the construction industry, but they can have a lot of fun creating lasting and meaningful friend- ships,” he commented. “I encourage all AGCC member firms to support CLC through participation by their future leaders.”
