Getting Started and Staying the Course

5-year-old camp  Dudley

In August 2014, a group of young adults had a vision of a Christ-centered ministry that was culturally relevant for inner-city students and their leaders. Almost a year later, RESET hosted its first summer camp targeting groups in the Gulf South region. Since that summer, RESET has provided a camp experience where students and leaders have had the opportunity to build relationships and connect with Christ. Our current status as an organization is

unique; my team and I all have full-time jobs. None of us, nor any of the summer volunteers from the previous five years, have received compensation. When I reflect on the past five years, I can see God’s hand in every success. I also see Him in every failure. He has given me wisdom that will impact every decision I make moving forward. Lesson 1: God will take care of you. 2017’s summer was our lowest-attended camp and we missed our goal by $10,000. However, inter- nally, we refer to 2017 as our first “real” year of camp. The Holy Spirit moved in ways we had not seen in previous years. Then, two days after

camp ended, God sent a $10,000 donor who had no idea about our financial burden. This moment alone was God showing that He will always make provisions for the vision He gives His children.

Lesson 2: There is beauty in simplicity.

When we reached our most comfortable finan- cial position, we wanted to provide every bell and whistle we could think of. However, we were reminded that none of those things are what make our ministry special. Our campers yearn for knowledge, community and hope. Focusing on those key areas keeps us relevant and appealing to students and leaders. It was Christ’s message that changed lives, not the fanfare. For us, it is the intentional effort to keep Christ at the center that has allowed us to witness lives changed. I don’t know the future of this ministry. Tat is

one of the most beautiful and terrifying things about this journey. My prayer is that God will put us on the right path with the right people who have the resources and skills we lack. Tere is a generation of inner-city students and leaders that will not only be impacted by RESET Camp but will go on to do great things for the king- dom in their own context.
