When you are trying to learn something new, do you ascribe to the old adage “practice makes perfect”? While how much you practice is indeed vital, how you practice is even more important. If you simply repeat the same moves over and over, you may not improve at all … and you might even get worse! According to research from Johns Hopkins, it’s far more effective to practice a slightly modified task each time.
1. Rehearse the basic skill. 2. Wait.
3. Practice again, but this time try something new: Go a little faster, go a little slower, break the activity into smaller parts, use different tools, etc.
4. Next time, slightly modify another condition.
Pollution and Mental Health
A recent study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal found that air pollution may be connected to anxiety and depression in children. According to the five-year study, researchers witnessed a rise in visits to the children’s psychiatric emergency department on days when there were spikes of ambient air pollution. Tey also found that children living in poverty were more vulnerable to these psychiatric effects.
