THE POWER OF ONE

By Stephanie Curran, CFE IAVM FOUNDATION:

In 1979, there was a tragedy at “The Who” concert in Cincinnati.

The crowd stampeded through the doors, mistakenly thinking the con- cert had started, and eleven people were killed. That one mistake was the catalyst for the creation of the IAVM Foundation, which funded the research and development of crowd management safety standards. On September 11, 2001, militants associated with al-Qaeda hi-

jacked four airliners and killed over 3,000 people, including over 400          changed the world as we knew it. 

line of the Boston Marathon killing three people and injuring several hundred others. Sixteen people lost limbs. That one act reminded us that any venue where large crowds are gathered is a target for terror- ism and caused us to re-kindle our focus on safety and security in our venues.

On May 22, 2017, a suicide bomber detonated a homemade bomb

at an exit of Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande concert. Twenty-three adults and children were killed, and two hundred and   we are living in and the responsibilities we face as venue managers to keep our guests and employees safe and secure. That one act immediately changed how Convention Centers manage security at these types of events. In each of these scenarios, one person with one idea was able to

change the world. I had the honor of meeting and speaking with Act- ing Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Elaine Duke at VenueConnect. She re-iterated the commitment of DHS to the safety and security of our venues, but my favorite thing she said to me was, “we are Americans and Americans are not afraid.” The same can be said for us. We are venue professionals, and venue professionals are not afraid. We are not afraid because we respond, and we act. Last year, IAVM member Kerry Painter, CFE, CEM, CMP came up with the idea that if 100 Women gave $100 to the Foundation, there would be $ 10,000 available to create scholarships for women of IAVM. That one idea enabled six women to attend IAVM confer- ences and schools. In August, IAVM member Robyn Williams, CFE, inspired by Ker-

ry’s idea, initiated the plan to raise Dollars for Diversity. In one af- ternoon at VenueConnect, $20,000.00 was raised to enhance diversity within IAVM.
