Over the summer, I had the privilege to attend IAVM’s Venue Management School (VMS) in beautiful Wheel-  path ahead. I started by asking myself some basic questions, and what I found were three principles that have carried me through both my professional and personal life. Don’t Be the Last Lobster in the Pot: Lobsters are boiled alive, and


their fate is determined once they are tossed in the lobster pot. ership & Critical Thinking class at the University of San Francisco.  - derstanding from this philosophy by not getting dragged down by a fellow “lobster.” Align yourself with a company, a mentor, a spouse, a friend—someone who shares the same values and has the same out- look on life as you. There are lobsters all around us, and it is too easy to be a lobster in this world, but the key to survival is associating with someone or some group that will help you get out of the lobster pot. Get Yourself a Hat Rack and A Good Pair of Walkin’ Boots: In his book, Wooden on Leadership, John Wooden stated on being a Coach,  rack, one with plenty of hooks,” because there are many jobs and re- sponsibilities that come with being a good coach or great manager. For venue professionals, this philosophy extends to all sectors that are   lead by example, like when John Wooden would put on his custodial   is unwilling to step in and do what needs to get done, then why would anyone follow suit? Throughout your journey you will wear many hats,  In Jon Spolestra’s book, Ice To The Eskimos, he used the “Manage


By Walking Around (MBWA)” principle when he was a marketing consultant for the New Jersey Nets. Spolestra’s simple practice is one that each of us can carry into our venues every day and know exactly  decks, loading docks, wherever you may be in your respected facility.  -    

career, there will be many peaks and valleys that you will endure. Working in the sports and entertainment industry can be demanding,          -  balance, and you will crawl out of the valley and begin to see the peak of your professional development. In the end, we all know it’s a mar- athon and not a sprint. About two years ago, I challenged myself to become more involved


   Mentor Connector Program. At the time, I was eager to advance my career in the industry and lay the foundation to develop my person- al brand. After the Mentor Connector Program, the wheels were in motion for me to take on more roles in the Association and challenge     in the inaugural 30-Under-30 Class, volunteering on the Young Pro- fessionals & Mentoring Committees, attending Venue Management School at Oglebay, as well as other various resources. Coincidentally, around the same time, I started getting involved with the Association, my favorite band, the Brothers Gene and Dean    2016. Even though I do not credit them for my successes, they have  be. By challenging myself, getting out of my comfort zone, and giving back to the Foundation, I have rediscovered an unbridled enthusiasm for the work that I do and the people that I work for. I am fortunate enough to work for a great event services department and convention center, because I am reassured that “the building will survive without you.” Besides the work that we do day in and day out, each of us are passionate about something, and it is up to you to discover this passion. Words cannot describe the gratitude I have for my development, but


over the past two years there have been various factors and individuals that have contributed to my professional development that I would like -        generosity and encouragement would not have sparked this newly found enthusiasm for my professional development.
