It was a hard decision as to who would chair it, as we needed to get some things done rather quickly. “Larry Perkins had responsibility for the International Crowd Man- agement Conference in November 2001, so he served as vice chair, while Frank Poe (Dubay’s predecessor as IAVM president) served as chair. We brought together like-minded associations to serve on what we called the Safety & Security Task Force (SSTF). We engaged with Homeland Security, and from the SSTF, eventually came the Acade- my for Venue Safety & Security that the Association now so expertly runs.”

Dubay looks back on those days and realizes that any venue could

have been and still could be the target of enemies seeking to cause mass destruction. “As I got older, and as years passed in being responsible for a venue,

agers but everyone to not throw in the towel and give up to the enemy. “However—however—as venue managers we must remain in our

resolve to protect our liberties,” he said. “We need to make sure our public assembly venues are open. It’s a place for members of our com- munity to go to enjoy sports, entertainment, the right to assembly, and we have to stand strong in those areas. One thing Dubay would not change is what happened in 2007

when at the annual conference he received the prestigious Charles A. McElravy Award and invited his partner of some 10 years, Cherie, to join him on stage. There, Dubay stunned a ballroom full of his colleagues (not to mention Cherie) by asking for her hand in marriage. “To bring her up there and see the tears in her eyes … it was spe- cial,” Dubay said. His daughters, Rachel Jansen and Rebecca Dubay, are both success- ful in their medical and education careers, respectively. One thing Dubay said he wishes he could have changed was earn-

the school, it was promoted for up-and-coming managers. Well, I was already a director. I didn’t go. In hindsight, I wish I would have gone because it is a great professional development opportunity, and I have also seen how students who have gone have bonded together from the         their CFE. I really wish it was something I had done.” So, regrets, yes, Dubay has had a few. Howver as an agent of

change, Dubay has had more than plenty of those, and the industry is all the better for it. FM

Lionel Dubay is absolutely a mentor in every sense of the word. In fact, in one of magazine articles I listed Lionel as one of my three “facility fathers.” The O’Dome was the de  experience. Lionel made sure they got that experience. In fact, a number of the students working now in the industry believe it or not while here were engineering students, business stu- dents, and from other areas of study who have turned out to be some of the best leaders. Lionel helped people catch the proverbial bug for this industry. I often tell the story of the time when I was associate director for Lionel when an engi-  call his parents to tell them he wanted to change his major and do facility management for a living because he had caught the bug!

What can I say about Lionel? I reported to Lionel for most of my 23 years in the venue management industry. Even when I no longer worked directly for Lionel, we continued to work    leadership team. Over the years, he has not only been a boss, but also a mentor and a friend. I have learned many things           believe is right, the power of friendship, how to save money (or make a buck!) and that integrity is everything. Early on, he opened doors that kick-started my volunteer service to IAVM and enabled me to hone my leadership skills through interac- tions with my peers. As I continued to be successful, Lionel kept supporting me with thoughtful advice and bragged about me as if I was one of his own daughters. Thank you, Lionel, for all your years of service to the industry, for pushing dozens of students like me to pursue their passion, and for always encouraging me to be the best that I can be.

Today IAVM is stronger because Lionel encouraged so many of us to get involved with committees, conferences and related volunteer work of the association.
