Did You Know? Original round “footballs” were made of animal bladders, includ- ing those of pigs. The term “pigskin” developed from inserting the with odd lumps and rolls. When vulcanized rubber was invented in the 1860s, the need to use animal bladders fell out of favour. The term “pigskin” managed to persist, however, and it stuck with the development of American football in the late 1800’s. FM
