Workshops Teach How to Draft Farm Leases to Support Conservation While more than 40 percent of Maryland’s farmland is leased, conservation practices are less prevalent on leased farms. Implementing these practices on leased land can lead to increased property value, improved soil health and productivity, and a healthier Chesapeake Bay. Tis winter, the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. is hosting an Agricultural Conservation Workshop Series to provide the agricultural community with leasing resources to promote on-farm conservation. Te free workshops will address common challenges to implementing conservation practices including insufficient communication between landowners and farmers, lack of knowledge of practices and funding opportunities, and a lack of stability in the leasing relationship. Workshop attendees will receive a copy of a new publication, Te Agricultural Conservation Leasing Guide, which walks landowners and farmers through the process of setting conservation goals and putting language in a lease to achieve those goals. Te guide is, “a timely and valuable tool to help farmers and landowners overcome barriers in implementing conservation practices to expand the good work that farmers have done to support cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay,” Hughes Center Executive Director Dr. Suzanne Dorsey said. Te free workshops run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will be held in various locations around the state. Remaining dates include January 8, 17, 23 and 28. Visit agresearch.umd.edu/agroecol for registration information.
