Turf Connections Announces Sales Manager Position Turf Connections has announced the addition of longtime turf industry professional, Glenn Quattlebaum, to the staff as Sales Manager. Quattlebaum brings more than 35 years of golf and turf industry sales experience in the Carolinas and the Southeast to the Sales Manager position. Quattlebaum earned a B.A. in Biology from Erskine College. Based in Manning, SC, Quattlebaum will serve turfgrass customers throughout the Southeast in the home building, landscape, sports turf and golf course industries. Turf Connections currently has four sod farm locations, two in North Carolina and two farms in South Carolina, growing bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and fescue sod and sprigs; delivery and installation services are offered.


STMA Names 6th Annual “Mowing Patterns Contest” Winner Kyle Calhoon, sports turf manager for the Hartford (CT) Yard Goats, is the 6th annual “Mowing Patterns Contest” winner. Calhoon was selected via a Facebook voting contest from October 22 to November 23 for his intricate design at Dunkin’ Donuts Park, home to the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. With expansive experience in Major League Baseball (Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees) and the National Football League, Calhoon most recently held the position of Grounds Manager for the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Hartford Yard Goats in 2016. In 2017 and 2018, he received the Diamond Pro Eastern League Sports Field Manager of the Year award. Calhoon graduated from Penn State University with a certificate in Turfgrass Management. Kim Heck, CAE, CEO of STMA says, “Kyle continues to elevate awareness of the sports turf industry through his impeccable field art.” She adds, “Finding the perfect balance of safety and visual appeal can be challenging, yet he has managed to accomplish this impressive feat.”


STMA Developing Series of BMP Bulletins Te Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) is developing a series of bulletins addressing Best Management Practices (BMPs) that can be implemented at sports facilities to reduce the environmental impact. Te first in the series that has been released is titled Mowing BMPs. It addresses mowing heights, frequency, direction, grass clippings, equipment and regulations. Te second in this series is Fertilization/Nutrient Management BMPs. It addresses soil and plant tissue testing, soil pH, fertilizer, nutrient application, as well as proper storage and disposal. OPEI Gives $10,000 to Kentucky Humane Society at MUTT MADNESS


MUTT MADNESS made its debut at the GIE+EXPO in Louisville in October. Te event garnered a lot of interest and, among other things, resulted in a $10,000 donation to the Kentucky Humane Society. “We took the definition of ‘show dog’ to a whole new level,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of Te Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which is the managing partner for GIE+EXPO. “Our industry is comprised of ‘outsiders,’ who love the outdoors and animals. MUTT MADNESS was a natural fit. After all, who knows your yard the best? Your dog. And who makes your yard possible? Te contractors, manufacturers, and landscapers who attend GIE+EXPO. It’s a win-win for everyone.” Several rescue dogs were adopted at MUTT MADNESS, a TurfMutt Pet Adoption Event, at the annual GIE+EXPO, the largest trade show for outdoor power equipment, lawn and garden equipment, light construction and landscape industries. Held in partnership with the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) and GIE+EXPO, the October 18, 2018, MUTT MADNESS event offered an opportunity for rescue dogs to find their forever homes from among the 24,000 show attendees. “We are thrilled to see these wonderful dogs find new homes. Ten rescue dogs were adopted at our inaugural MUTT MADNESS event, and even more dogs from the show found their forever homes over the weekend,” said Kiser. OPEI’s environmental education platform, TurfMutt, donated a
