DR. JOHN SOROCHAN BECOMES TURF NEWS EDITORIAL ADVISOR
John Sorochan, PhD, has agreed to serve as Turf News Editorial Advisor for warm-season grasses. Sorochan is a tireless promoter of natural turf, an active member of Te Lawn Institute’s Research Committee and of TPI’s Conference Education Committee.
TLI will hold an Open
Research Committee meeting in conjunction with the TPI 2019 International Education Conference in Charlotte, NC, on Tuesday, February 19, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Conference attendees are invited to sit in on this meeting to learn more about what TLI is doing in research support and funding.
Sorochan earned his BS in 1995; his MS in 1999; and his PhD in 2002, all in Crop & Soil Sciences from Michigan State University. Dr. Sorochan is currently a Distinguished Professor of Turfgrass Science and Management in the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Tennessee
(UT) in Knoxville, TN. He also serves as the Director for the UT Center for Athletic Field Safety. In addition, he is an international consultant on sports field performance and the Advisor on Field Safety and Performance for the National Football League (NFL) Players Association.
Dr. Sorochan is responsible for the department's academic turf programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level and teaches several classes in the Turfgrass Science and Management Program. His research program coordinates investigations on environmental turf stress physiology including indirect heat, shade, drought, and wear stress for golf course, sports turf, and commercial and home lawn turf. His research also includes athletic field management, including athletic field performance and safety, athlete to surface interactions, new cultivar and species evaluation for management and use, sustainable strategies for reduced inputs for golf courses, residential turf, and sod production. Since arriving at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Sorochan has given over 200 invited presentations at regional, national, and international professional meetings.

The Microclover begins to produce nitrogen naturally within 8 to 10 months after establishment. Therefore it is recommended that a nitrogen source be applied at least two times to aid in the turfgrass establishment. Phosphate and potash levels should be checked by soil testing and balanced prior to seeding. After a year the 3-D Self Feeding Lawn will produce the needed nitrogen for most cool season turf applications. Phosphate and potash levels should be checked every 2 levels for optimum plant health.
