Assessment of Equipment Efficacy Eleven experiments were conducted at the W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center in West Lafayette, IN, from 2015 to 2017 to evaluate the effectiveness of different spray equipment on postemergence broadleaf control. Te efficacy of the spray equipment was tested using different commercially available postemergence broadleaf herbicides or herbicide pre-mixtures in each experiment. Herbicides tested included WSSA Group 2 (acetolactate synthase (ALS)- inhibitor, florasulam), pre-mixtures of WSSA Group 4 (synthetic auxin herbicides), or premixtures of WSSA Group 4 + 2 or Group 4 + 14 (protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-inhibitor). Te experimental sites were typical of Kentucky bluegrass lawns with a uniform cover of dandelion and white clover.

Figure 2.

Four commonly used equipment types were tested using various commercially available broadleaf herbicides at labeled applications rates. Application equipment included a PermaGreen Triumph spreader/sprayer (PermaGreen™ Supreme, Inc.) delivering 10.9 gal/ac using a single TF-VS3 Turbo FloodJet nozzle (Teejet, Spraying Systems Co.), a Z-Spray Junior (L.T. Rich Products Inc.) spreader/sprayer calibrated to deliver either 10 or 20 gal/ac in these experiments using Albuz AVI nozzles (Solcera, France) on a 4-nozzle boom, a Lesco ChemLawn Spray Gun (LESCO, Inc.) calibrated to deliver 87 gal/ac, and a hand-held boom sprayer (Bellspray, Inc.) with three XR8002VS flat fan nozzles (Teejet, Spraying Systems Co.) calibrated to deliver 87 gal/ac (Figure 2). Te Z-Sprayer was operated at 50 psi and the other sprayers were operated at 30 psi. Te lawn gun and the hand-held boom sprayer were powered by CO2

pressure.
