Sitting on the Same Side of the Table


The FEDA Future of Distribution Council is helping dealers and suppliers move from default competitiveness to default collaboration.

T


he foodservice equipment and supplies industry is not the only business segment that has been associated with the “Wild West,” in terms of its dealer and manufacturer relationships, but it certainly has exemplified the concept. While this reference generally points to a rough and lawless frontier, this industry’s pioneers, going back to 1933, did have to work through how foodservice equipment and supplies would be made, acquired and sold. They also had to manage power struggles over how they would do business


together during and after a distressing Depression-era economy. That road wasn’t easy, but over time an impressive industry emerged that led to the formation of many magnificently successful distribution and manufacturing companies, as well as the development of long-term business relationships between them. These companies have continued to operate and compete well. Working for nearly a century with deeply embedded antitrust laws has gradually eliminated most “Wild West” behavior, freeing dealers and
