through the pursuit of undergradu- ate liberal arts, graduate, and semi- nary education.”
I would like to share with you some ways that equipping—or, that teaching, if you will—is taking place. If you keep up with ARP news, you may already know about the Global Theological Education Initiative, a partnership between Erskine Semi- nary and World Witness, where theo- logical instruction is being provided to over 300 pastors in Rwanda and Pakistan. The Lord is expanding this ministry to Mexico, and there are plans to increase its reach on the Af- rican continent. This teaching could change the course of nations! Back in the US on the Erskine campus, the most visible teaching is - worship, and preaching for the en- tire student body. Then there are organizations such as ARP Student Outreach, Ratio Christi, the Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes, and a new student-led ministry called Koino- nia. In addition, there are numerous small group Bible studies facilitated by our director of campus ministries and external relations, Rev. Dr. Ja- mie Williams.
All these initiatives are good and
healthy. They would not be as vibrant, however, if they were not undergirded daily by staff and faculty whose class- their commitment to Christ. Several years ago, a young man and his twin brother graduated from Erskine and were pursuing master’s degrees at a prestigious West Coast university. He told me it was im- mediately obvious in the master’s
program that he and his brother thought “differently” from their classmates. When I asked what he meant, he replied, “Our business professors at Erskine taught us to think from a Biblical perspective.” I am reminded of a math professor who, in presenting very complex equa-
“Doesn’t this equation point you to our wonderful Creator!” When I asked a group of students one day who their favorite professor was, without hesita- tion, the entire group said the name of our political science professor. Their reason? “He starts our classes with a devotion and then gives us a Christian perspective on the events we’re studying.” Perhaps you have had the pleasure of hearing the Erskine Choraleers in
concert. Their director very intentionally chooses pieces that are not only His relationship to His children. In doing so, he is not just teaching music; he is teaching his students and audiences who God is and that God is the source of all beauty.
from a class for undergraduates, one of our history professors held a mini- lecture for high school students who were visiting the campus. She posed the question, “Who gets to determine truth?” and then led the group on a tour through history and various philosophical schools of thought, arriving at the conclusion, “All truth comes from God and from His Word.” This same pro- fessor told the audience that she prays before she enters every class, asking the Lord to teach her so that she can teach His truth to the students entrusted to her.
These are just examples of what is happening at Erskine daily. We are a ministry of the denomination, and we deeply need and desire your prayers. As a missional institution, we are here not only to strengthen the faith of be- lieving students but to introduce Christ to those who do not yet know Him. In addition to praying for faculty and staff, pray for Rev. Seob Kim, Due West ARP Church’s new associate pastor for youth and college outreach, as he min- isters to Erskine students. Pray also for the college as it seeks a campus pastor. The Lord has called all His children to be students and instructors, not just those who have careers in educational settings. May we never stop praying, “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”
