ARPC Spotlight Walking in Faith Bess Hambright turns 108
ARPC Spotlight
On October 13th, Bess Alice Hambright Phifer turned 108. She has been a member of the Boyce Memorial ARP Church for 79 years. During the last century, she has seen Growing up on the family farm near the Kings Mountain National military park, she had seven siblings. Their lives revolved around family, school, and church, and their roots run deep in the community. Bess attended school in a one-room schoolhouse that her mother founded. The family
provided lodging for the teacher in their home. Bess’ earliest memories are of picking peanuts, chores were a common part of farm life. “My sister and I milked cows before we went to school. At that time, my mother and daddy were selling milk in those tin cans, and the dairy would come by and pick them school. And then we do it again when we come back home.”
When Bess was just 12, she attended the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. While in her Junior and Senior years of high school, Bess played basketball and participated in the United States from 1934-1935. After High school, she attended Asheville College and earned a teaching degree. She taught sixth graders and coached their High School women’s basketball team. In the early part of World War II, Bess worked at the Shell plant in Charlotte, making mm shells. “I inspected the little percussion cup to make sure it had powder in it. I did it at night on the third shift.”
