wealth of interesting ARP local church history information? While recently doing some research in the library for a church event, I came across a helpful article published in the “Histories and Current Events” column by Miss Rachel Pressly in the December 1975 issue of The A.R.P. How to Write a Good History of Your Own Local Church

SIZE Great histories may have to wait for

great men and women to write them, but good histories are written every year by 

I. Two Kinds of Histories. There are

       thing you have to decide is, which one do 

ONE-PERSON PROJECTS A. History written by one person as his or her own project, according to his or her own loves and preferences. Often the very best history comes this way. If you feel that -  back. Get started.

GROUP PROJECTS

B. History written by one or more per- sons as the project of a group such as a Con- gregation, Session, Circle, Young People, Women of the Church, or Committee. Often only this kind of project will get an indi- vidual or group of individuals to tackle the job and carry it through to completion. B. Do you want to dig down deep and get to the bottom of things, or will a good simple survey of the main facts as easily come by and commonly understood suit you and your  

STYLE

C. Then know as early as possible what kind of style you are aiming at. III. Parameters. You will save a lot of grief if you have some limits. Time and talent are the commonest ones.

TALENT B. If you yourself are going to be the historian, sort out a clear picture of what you can do

My hope is that these points will encourage church historians to write their annual history.

Your histories can be submitted at any time even for prior years. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions about your church history or to plan a visit to this library.
