During World War II, the plant became one of the biggest employers in the county, par- ticularly in the employment of women. This was an extremely dangerous workplace to work in, and the employees took their job seriously. The plant went into operation on De- cember 17th, 1942, just 10 days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Bess was about to face the biggest challenge of her life, serving in the American National

Red Cross from 1943 until 1946. A coworker at Waco suggested they apply for the American National Red Cross together. Bess joined in Atlanta, Georgia, and went to Washington, DC, for training. “When I got to Washington, I was in training for 6 weeks and then was as- 

Bess began her service on the island of Hawaii at a Red Cross rest camp that had been established during World War I. We had everything: a golf course and Tennis Courts. We had about 200 bicycles. All the men seem to like to ride bikes. We had archery. And we’d take them by van around the volcano and the bird park. Every 5 days, 500 men would ar- rive at the rest camp for 5 days of rest and relaxation. “We worked from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.” said Bess. Bess received four promotions during her time. She was over the Red Cross work. She said it was a pretty big deal. While working in Hawaii, Bess met her husband, Marriott Phifer, a Kings Mountain native. Due to her duties, she didn’t see him much when he was at the camp. 

All those fellows and no complaints from them, she paused, that was the thing I noticed the most, they didn’t complain.” One day Bess found a 40 mm shell casing on the ground and - ed it to a candle holder for her at their shop, and she has kept it as a Memento all these years. Bess was discharged on May 13th, 1946. Lieutenant Bess Alice Hambright spent the next 28 days traveling home to her family on Handbrake Road. Six weeks later, on June 26t,h 1946, Bess Alice and bright married Marriott Phifer in a double wedding at Antioch Baptist Church with her sister. Marriott’s family belonged to Boyce Memorial ARP church, so they joined that congregation. She has now been a member for 79 years. Together, Bess and Marriott have four children: Dr. Rita Phifer, Doyt Phifer, Connie Savell, M.D. Phifer Jr, and one granddaughter. Bess eventually returned to teaching. During her career, she taught for 27 years, educating the community’s children. Bess served as a Sunday school teacher for the 4th and 5th graders, was active in circle, knitted shawls for hospice, and worked in the gift shop at Bonclarken Conference Center. What is most impressive about Bess is her faith. She never feared serving in the Red

Cross, saying, “I wasn’t scared of it. I felt like I was where I needed to be. I never felt like I shouldn’t have done this.” 
