y any measure, 2020 will be a watershed year for Mike Blach, Chairman of San Jose-based

Blach Construction. Te dynamic, perpetually forward-

thinking construction industry executive will not only lead his own company in commemorating its 50th anniversary in signature Blach style – highlighted by an ambitious year-long campaign of community service – but he also takes the helm of AGC of California (AGC) during the associa- tion’s historic Centennial year. “All the interesting things that we

do inside, all the thinking that we do and the building and developing we do, all that is only possible because of construction,” Teichert commented during a Centennial video that AGC debuted during its 2020 Installation & Awards Gala. “So, because we built the roads and streets that led there, because we built the housing develop- ments that people are in, because we built indoor plumbing – there’s a lot of interesting things that would not be possible without construction.” Mike Aparicio, executive vice

president of Skanska, added, “It is a wonderful and noble cause that

we have, building out the state of California, and the impact that we have on society is tremendous.” Just a few of the many impactful

projects that AGC members have built in California throughout AGC’s 100-year history are featured with this article. And in each issue of California Constructor magazine this year, we will highlight not only the projects but the many accomplishments and milestones that AGC has helped the construction industry achieve over the past century. Dick Elsperman, 2020 president

of AGC of America and executive vice president/COO with Tarlton Corporation, St. Louis, Mo. lauded the impact AGC of California has had not only in California but nationwide during his recent address at the Instal-

among myriad other projects. For Mike Blach, who took over

the company at the age of just 26 following the unexpected passing of his father, Michael S. Blach, in 1989, the year ahead offers a unique oppor-

tunity to effect change and make a difference during a seminal point in history for both Blach Construction and AGC. “It is a true honor and really special

to be taking over AGC in our 100th year,” Blach commented. “My dad was a real believer in AGC and instilled in me what it could do and had done for our company. Had he lived a longer life, I’m sure he would have been an AGC President himself.”

lation & Awards Gala. “When AGC of America was just

getting going we needed a chapter of strong contractors in California to help us be successful,” he commented. “One hundred years later, your chapter remains a key part of our success as a national association, whether it’s your advocacy on key industry issues with your state legislature or the work you’ve done creating the Build California program, which is exemplary across the country and a template for others as they address this workforce issue. Te California chapter is going to continue to be at the forefront of knowledge creation and delivery, and it's leaders like you that will make this happen.” 
