MEET NPM’S NEWEST MEMBER LEADERS
Stephen Obarski Certification Forum Chair
Steve Obarski has been a member of NPM since 1983. He has worked in the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph (Kansas) and the Office of Worship and Christian Initiation for the Diocese
of Camden (New Jersey), as well as serving in parish music ministry leadership. He has been married for 47 years to his wife Alice, who is also a pastoral musician and liturgist. Steve is currently semi-retired but serving as Interim Organist/Music Director for the Polish Apostolate at St. Joseph Church in South Camden, New Jersey.
In his new role as Certification Forum Chair, Steve is looking forward to getting to know the people involved in leadership in the certification process. He sees his biggest challenge as working in collaboration with others to ensure that the certification process helps members “become more knowledgeable and capable in their craft and become better servants of their communities and their liturgical celebrations.” He also acknowledges the need to ensure that the certification process reflects the diversity that exists in the Association, both in terms of culture and ecclesiology.
Steve is grateful for the opportunity that he has in semi-retirement to work regularly with his wife Alice in music ministry. He also “takes delight in the surprises of the Holy Spirit, including the surprise invitation to serve NPM in a leadership capacity with the Certification Forum.”
Richard Putorti Region 2 Representative
Richard Putorti is the Director of Music at St. Mary's in Crescent, New York, in the Diocese of Albany. He is currently the Co-Chapter Director and a founding member of the Albany Chapter
of NPM. Richard has served at the diocesan level in a variety of ways including directing music for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary Mass at the Auriesville Shrine and most recently serving on the Diocesan Synod Team. At the request of a group of diocesan musicians, he created and for seven years directed “Tuned For Praise,” an annual choral concert. Richard is most passionate about bringing young people into music ministry and has formed teen ensembles in five parishes throughout his years in ministry. He created “Music and Liturgy at Pyramid Lake,” a summer music camp for diocesan youth to sing together and play instruments and learn about, plan, and develop leadership skills in liturgical music. His song “Follow the Light” is published with GIA music, and “Instruments of Christ” is published with ILP Music.
