LENT & TRIDUUM Meg Matuska

Gloriosi: Music of the Paschal Triduum/ Música del Triduo Pascual

Tony Alonso. SATB choir, cantor, keyboard, guitar, various instruments. Spiral-bound accompaniment edition GIA G-10515, $50.00. Editions for choir, guitar, instruments, as well as recordings, available separately.

Tis collection presents a comprehensive walk through the rites of the Sacred Paschal Triduum for communities celebrating a bilingual English/Spanish liturgy with contemporary ensemble. A mix of newly composed music, along with arrangements of Latin-American songs and traditional chants, make this a valuable resource. Most of the selections are available as stand- alone octavos, but the spiral-bound accompaniment book is a welcome reference. It includes a helpful introduction explaining the editorial choices made, as well as copious notes on each piece, with background and performance suggestions. Both the introduction and notes are presented in English and Spanish.

Laudably, an effort is made to draw musical connections through the three-day liturgy. A common song for Communion is presented, “Called to the Supper of the Lamb,” with verses that vary each day. Text writers and translators include Alan Hommerding, Peter Kolar, and Santiago Fernández.

Te collection shows respect for the proper texts from the Roman Missal, as in the Entrance for Holy Tursday,

COLLECTIONS FOR

“We Should Glory in the Cross,” and “Love One Another” for the Mandatum, or Washing of the Feet. Additionally, care is taken to musically tie together the large sections of liturgical action, such as during the Vigil’s Baptismal Liturgy, where the melodic material comes from the Litany of the Saints melody and the Aleluya Popular, well-known to many Spanish- speaking Catholics.

New settings of several ritual elements are included, most notably the Good Friday Solemn Intercessions, and the Litany of the Saints for the Vigil. Tese are also available as separate octavos.

Notably, several classic traditional chants are presented, sometimes metered and accompanied, as with “Ubi Caritas” and “Tantum Ergo.” Tese settings may present a way to introduce these cherished melodies to assemblies who have not sung them recently. Perhaps one of the most valuable elements of this collection is the presentation of the (unaccompanied, missal melody) Exsultet, which will be helpful to all who proclaim this sacred chant in bilingual communities.

Te layout of the book and careful presentation of the contents are to be commended. Te singable melodies and uncomplicated accompaniments will enable many parishes and communities to celebrate well our most sacred days.
