NOVEMBER 2022 Amy
Voorhees Girardot Family Scholarship
OCP Scholarship
Amy Voorhees currently lives in the Texas Hill Country outside of Fredericksburg and works as the Director of Liturgy and Music Ministry at St. Mary's Catholic Church. As a wife of 23 years, mother to eight children (five currently in the home), full-time employee, and part-time student, life is busy! After a 20+ year hiatus from college (she started as a Music Education major with a Vocal Concentration at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996), Amy was excited to finally get to work on finishing her degree at Loyola University New Orleans, where she will receive her B.A. in Ministry and Teology, God willing, in the Fall of 2023. She intends to go on to complete her M.A. in Liturgy and Sacred Music and is honored to have been chosen to receive one of the NPM scholarships this year.
Amy first became involved in NPM when she took on the position of Director of Music for a Catholic church in Brenham, Texas. She attended a conference for choir conductors in Colorado while she was “hugely pregnant” with her fourth child. Amy recalls, “Paul French told me that I showed great promise as a conductor and that I should not give up, no matter how many kids I had. To this day, it's one of the compliments I cherish the most.”
Amy finds working with youth musicians to be very fulfilling, as she helps them develop as music ministers. She gives them opportunities to choose music for Mass sometimes, and she doesn’t “only tell them what to do, but why.” For Amy, helping parishioners to experience Mass at a higher level of prayer and spirituality is the ultimate goal. She loves her job and looks for “every possible opportunity to be better at it and to learn more about how to make the liturgy what it should be.” Amy says, “Working on my degree is one more step to achieving more knowledge, so that I can be an asset to my congregation and my church.”
