“I treasure the many, many colleagues and friends I have made through NPM all over the country.”

colleagues and friends I have made through NPM all over the country. I want to encourage everyone to meet other Catholic musicians in their area and welcome newcomers into their local chapter. Te greatest resource we have as an organization is each other.”

Charles has held positions in various professional organizations, including the NPM Chapter Boards in Grand Rapids and Denver. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Rhodes College and the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from the University of Memphis. Charles lives with his wife and three teenagers in South Aurora, Colorado, in a home where the singing is constant and the Nerf battles are frequent.

Charles joined NPM at the suggestion of his mentor, Jane Scharding Smedley, not long after starting his first job as a music director at St. Terese Parish in Memphis, Tennessee. He still has his first issue ofPastoral Music magazine (February-March 1997) in his library. Charles remembers that he was “quietly included in (snuck into)” an organ masterclass taught by Olivier Latry at a 1998 Regional Convention. He says, “What an experience for a young, neophyte organist/music director to be sitting ten feet away from the organist titulaire of Notre-Dame de Paris! It is something I will never forget!”

For Charles, the most fulfilling part of being a pastoral musician is being with parishioners and their families “in the best and worst of times, the happy times and sad times, and each Sunday in between. To share the gift of music with so many continues to be a great blessing.” Charles has been blessed to serve in many different parishes—large, small, urban, suburban—and in several cathedrals. Charles says, “I treasure the many, many
