Henry Rye GIA Scholarship
Henry Rye is a freshman organ and math double- major at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he studies with James E.
Bobb. At St. Olaf, Henry enjoys participating in the daily morning prayer services offered in the chapel on campus and serves as the substitute organist at a nearby church. He is excited about improving his skills and learning new ones as he embarks on his college journey, planning to enter the field of church music.
Henry began his organ studies five years ago in his hometown of Naperville, Illinois, studying with Jay Yau of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Prior to college, Henry was a substitute organist at area churches of different denominations. He has many years of
experience singing in choirs, playing handbells, and composing music, all of which he continues to do in college. Henry enjoys competitive swimming, gaming, and hiking in unique destinations. He recently hiked a volcano in Iceland which erupted just five days later!
Henry first became involved with NPM when applying for colleges and has been enjoying reading the weekly Sunday Word reflections ever since. Henry’s biggest challenge in his ministry arises from playing at different churches with varying belief and worship systems. Henry says, “Tis requires a level of versatility that is very challenging to accomplish, as I need to know the liturgy of any church where I play very well.” For Henry, the most fulfilling part of being a pastoral musician is “getting to share the wonderful liturgical music repertoire.” He continues, “So many gorgeous hymns, anthems, and chant settings have been composed, and I love being able to praise the Lord through these beautiful vessels.”
