EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S TURF Autmn: A Season of Transition
Casey Reynolds, PhD
Depending on where you are in the world, that cool feeling of fall is hopefully beginning to knock at the door or at the very least is on the horizon. Of course, if you are one of our Australian members reading this from Down Under then you are heading into Spring and that may not apply.
While the Autumn season doesn’t officially begin for those of us here in the United States until September 22nd
, I
know for me it’s at least on my mind. Partly because of the cooler weather, but mostly because I’ve always thought of fall as a season of transition. As a former college student and later as a faculty member, it was the transition of new classes, new students, and new energy. Now as a parent, it’s the energy and excitement of a child as they meet their new teachers and make new friends.
Of course, bringing this back now to TPI, fall is always the time of the year in which we launch registration for the next year’s conference. It’s also the time of year we attend our TPI fall board meeting where we set the agenda and budget for the following year of TPI business. In some ways, we are planting the seeds this fall for next year’s crops. Tis year though, the over-arching theme of an autumn transition is even more appropriate.
I say this because TPI itself is in somewhat of a transition right now. It’s one that we have been planning on for a few years, and one that we knew was coming, but a transition none-the-less.
If you were in San Antonio, Texas, for the 2025 TPI Conference you may recall that we celebrated Geri Hannah’s retirement. We also announced Steve and Suz Trusty’s pending retirement at the end of 2025, the addition of Martin Bocksch, and now more recently the departure of Allie Roed. We of course still have Liz Lonsbrough, Steve and Suz are with us until the end of 2025, and we just hired Kyle Brown as TPI Communications Manager and Turf News Editor. You can read more about him on page 54 of this issue. We also are currently in the process of hiring another staff member and hope to have someone in a new role soon.
As anyone who has managed transition before knows, change can sometimes be stressful. Rest assured though, I and the TPI Board are fully committed to seeing us through this fall transitional period, and we are excited about the crops it can bring next year. After all, as the saying goes, “Autumn is the season that teaches us change can be beautiful.”
(And if you need any convincing that transitions can be beautiful, just ask Geri Hannah, who is living it up in Australia with her grandkids right now!)
Cheers, Casey Reynolds Rest assured though, I and the TPI Board are fully committed
to seeing us through this fall transitional period, and we are excited about the crops it may bring next year.
