Garden Rose
‘VICTORIAN RED’ Dream Farms ‘Victorian Red’ is the perfect rose for someone looking for an alternative to traditional dozen red roses, says judge Jodi McShan, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, of McShan Florist in Dallas. “You can use it for someone who likes traditional red roses, or someone wanting something more trendy, because it has that garden rose shape and style,” she said. Callister detected a hint of raspberry in the velvety petals. “It almost looks like a dark, raspberry red in a way, which is very good with the [Pantone] color of the year, magenta.”
Spray Rose
‘BRIDAL VEIL’ Eufloria Flowers Fragrant, ruffled edges drew in McShan, who also scored ‘Bridal Veil’ high for how its unique petals opened in a pinwheel pattern. “The ruffles and structure gave the flower texture and movement,” she said. “This is a unique garden spray rose.” Callister is familiar with the variety because it is a staple at Ensign. “It’s a gorgeous, consistent white spray rose — and we love it,” she said. Growers, such as Leo Roozen, AAF, of Washington Bulb Co. in Mount Vernon, Washington, were impressed by its perfection. “White shows every imperfection,” Roozen said. “If there’s something wrong, you’ll see it. This is a great specimen.”
Decorative Foliage and Berries
‘WINTER SPIRIT’ Sun Valley Floral Farms It took DeVries 15 years to breed this variety, which features dense berry sets with minimal berry loss during transit. ‘Winter Spirit’ won over judges with its bountiful berries. “You could use one stem and get a lot done with it,” said judge Ben Dobbe of Holland America Flowers in Arroyo Grande, California. “It’s packed with berries all the way to the tip, which makes it really usable.” The berries are consistent and well formed, and the variety’s color has appeal through fall and into the winter holidays, noted Kennicott. “It’s a great addition for our industry and certainly deserves ‘Best in Class.’”
