Fresh Choices BY KATIE VINCENT

PALETTE TRENDS TO TRY > Aside from December’s unmistakable sparkle, winter days mostly trudge on in dreary darkness. Color, be it from a coat or scarf or fl oral arrangement, can lift moods and spark imagination. In addition to selecting a “Color of the Year” (to be announced in early December), the Pantone Color Institute, widely viewed as the world’s authoritative source on color trends, creates biannual color palettes based on various cultural factors, including fashion, art, technology, the entertainment industry, popular travel destinations, political events and socioeconomic conditions. The Fall 2023/Winter 2024 color palette features a mix of warm and deep shades, including a few more typically associated with springtime or the tropics: Persimmon, Conch Shell, Fiery Red, Fired Brick, Sharp Green, Lacecap Hydrangea, Spectra Yellow, Olive Oil, Sparkling Grape and Blue Atoll. Rounding out these vibrant hues, Pantone also named fi ve neutrals: Pale Khaki, Forest Night, Nimbus Cloud, Seedpearl and Lava Smoke. “Using more modern, relevant color combinations

will set retailers apart from online outlets off ering fl oral gifts,” says Michael Derouin, AAF, AIFD, CAFA, PFCI, a Massachusetts-based fl oral educator and program chairman for Emerge, the 2024 AIFD Symposium in Orlando. “Whether a fl orist’s style is traditional, transitional or contemporary, their selection in color can give the arrangement a ‘designer’ feel.” One combination Derouin recommends: Dutch

antique hydrangeas in deep red or purple with lavender roses, ‘Odessa’ calla lilies and deep red dahlias, embellished with millet, grasses or wheat. For budget- conscious consumers, you can modify the same high-end look with more aff ordable blooms, such as deep purple kale, burgundy disbud chrysanthemums or gerrondo gerberas and various shades of Florigene’s ‘Mooncarnations.’ “Accenting with grasses or fresh fruit will take up a good amount of physical space and give additional perceived value,” he says.
