mind me how strong I am and that I can push through,” she said. Getting to hang out with her teammates is one of the best parts of running for Brie. They always know how to make her laugh, and they always cheer her on no matter what. “I have a best friend that is like a sister, Melissa Verslues,” Brie shared. “She always supports me and celebrates my successes like it is her own. She is always proud of me and what I accomplish.” She credits her successes right back to those same people who have never left her side. Especially her closest friends. “My best friend Brie makes me want to become a better athlete by seeing how committed she is to running,” Melissa shared. “Brie is the most determined person I know and is always setting new goals to reach, which encour- ages me to set new goals.” Coming from a highly athletic family  even gone on to play at the collegiate level (her mom, Myra, and her brother, Lee), there is no shortage of motivation for Melissa. She works hard, and she loves doing it.

As they enter senior year, both girls are setting examples and setting goals. Brie is training to beat her current PRs and to be All-State again (alongside younger sister, Lexi, this time). Melissa is determined to do the same, plus make sure she gets their girls' team to place top four at state. With each practice, meet, and train- ing session, Brie and Melissa are leading the FHS underclassmen and showing them what it looks like to be a great teammate and athlete. “We are blessed to have two great leaders and role models on the team,” said Bridges.
