Fall Into ArcherY

MDC Offers Ranges and Events Statewide Story and Photography by: Missouri Department of Conservation

As students settle into their new classrooms and after-school activities, fall also brings along changes to the natural world. As the seasons transition from warm, summer days to cooler, fall days, many people look forward to spending their free time outdoors. This year, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages individuals of all ages to learn to shoot archery as they take advan- tage of the pleasant fall weather.

Archery is the skill of using a bow to propel arrows. Nearly ev- eryone – regardless of age, size, or physical ability – can succeed at archery. With a storied history in the Show-Me State, archery is an activity that has long been enjoyed by Missourians of all ages. In Central Missouri, MDC maintains an archery shooting range at the MDC Camdenton Conservation Service Center. Open to the pub- lic, this archery range allows visitors to practice their shooting skills 

chery-themed events designed for participants of all ages and skill levels. A list of these events can be found on the MDC website at mdc. mo.gov under the “Find Things To Do” tab or under the “Events” tab. Even schools can take part in educating students on how to shoot archery through the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Pro- gram (MoNASP). Archery programs are shown to improve school attendance, increase self-esteem, get kids outdoors, and more. The MoNASP program supports international-style target archery in physical education classes during the school day for grades 4 through 12. Learn more about MoNASP at mdc.mo.gov under the “Education” tab.

Shooting archery can also be done on private property with mini- mal gear needed. Just a target, a safe shooting lane, and a bow are necessary. Make sure to know what is behind your target, especial- ly if you are still working to improve your aim.             great time to practice archery skills before ever hitting the woods to hunt, and MDC encourages the public to utilize the free archery 
