There is no divide or superiority between coaches when the rink offers flexibility for everyone to excel in the sport as they choose. Skaters can move seamlessly between disciplines when supported by a staff of diverse and knowledgeable coaches open to helping each other and guiding skaters to follow their desired paths.
Association (PSA) states that the three organizations will recognize and support each other’s role in the development of figure and recreational skating in the United States. Coaches and rink program directors benefit by promoting these organizations to their skaters, and it is possible to do so successfully with ISI classes and events as a rink’s foundation.
At the Centennial Ice Rinks in
Wilmette, Ill., the ISI program has been embraced and a success for 45 years. On any given freestyle, there are class skaters who have recently passed Delta alongside junior and senior competitive U.S. Figure Skating students. A harmonious blend of coaches line the sides of the ice. A few coaches may be ISI members only,
while others hold memberships in U.S. Figure Skating and PSA as well. Tere is something to be learned from each other in such an environment.
Vickie Tassone, the rink’s skating
director, always strives to offer classes and ice time to suit all skaters and their interests. In addition to traditional ISI toddler through freestyle classes, Axel, and spin and power classes include skaters who may not be following the ISI test track. A weekly high school class allows older skaters more performance and competition opportunities serving as a segue into collegiate skating and competitions. New freshmen are eager to join their peers of recreational skaters and competitive high-level skaters.
