COACHES’ CORNER STEPS TO NAVIGATING AN ISI NATIONAL EVENT T
HERE’S NO DOUBT that at some point in your coaching career, you will consider taking skaters to an ISI
competition. Most likely it will be a local event — perhaps one at your own rink or at a rink within your district. Tis is usually familiar territory for you. Maybe you skated in the event “back in the day” or maybe you’ve coached at this event for 20 years. You know the rules, the players and the drill.
But have you done a national event?
Tis question will probably come up sooner than later as ISI has recently adopted the mantra of “bringing ISI to YOU!” National events are being considered in areas of the country that haven’t hosted previously or in the recent past. Tis is both exciting and potentially confusing for coaches who might want to dip their toes in that water. To alleviate any uncertainty, we have compiled some key tips and facts to help you navigate a national event with ease and confidence.

traditional announcement packet to print out. Tis is because all the information about our national events can be found on our website (
skateisi.org) under ISI Competition Information/National Event Description. Tis includes the types of events being offered, figures and compulsory maneuvers selected, events offered at a discounted rate as well as the yearly theme for any events listed as such. Te 2020 theme is “Vacation … all I ever wanted; had to get away.” You are encouraged to create programs that express what this means to you and your skaters. Tis applies to Solo and Couples Spotlights as well as Team Production. Basic information that does not change, such as event durations, maneuver limitations and eligibility, can be found in the ISI Handbook, which should be your first resource when planning your skaters’ programs.

Info Is Online
Te first thing that can often throw a coach is the fact that a national event does not have an “announcement” per se. Of course the event is announced, dates and venue are given, a logo is displayed and the event is advertised in multiple locations, both online and in print. But there will not be a

Once you have determined that you would like to have your skaters participate in a national event, there are two options for getting them entered. Te first is via a paper form that can be found on our website under the actual event tab. Te form would need to be downloaded and printed, filled out and either faxed, scanned or attached to an email and sent to me at
KHansen@skateisi.org (most preferred method) or postmarked and mailed to my attention at: ISI, 6000 Custer Rd., Plano, TX, 75023. Tere are four different entry forms: Individual Tot-Delta, Individual Level 1-10 ; Dance events; and Team events. It is important that you give your skaters the correct form to fill out as the Tot-Delta entry form charges lower first-event fees than the level 1-10 form. Tis is because we realize that your newest skaters might not yet be as invested in competition as your more seasoned skaters, and the lower fee helps to encourage participation.
events that are either skated as a solo or couple. In
Te “individual forms” are for those the case that you have two
skaters performing a Couples Spotlight, Pair, Couples or Jump and Spin event, it is required that both skaters fill out their own entries and pay for those events separately. One area of confusion is the Jump and Spin event. It is typically offered as a discounted event when done as an additional event. Tis is usually a great way to get two skaters to work together and participate as a team, but it can be a source of frustration if one or both skaters are not doing another Individual/Couples event. When this happens, the Jump and Spin event is considered a first event and the fee is higher. We therefore advise you to use that event as a supplement and not an “only” event for any skaters.
Another area of uncertainty is when a
coach is entering a Family Spotlight. Tat event can be found on the team form. While this may seem counterintuitive when you have two sisters or a mom and son skating together, it is still considered a team event and listed on the team form because there can be three or more skaters in a family participating in a Family Spotlight.
Te second way to register for an
ISI national event is through Entryeeze (
Entryeeze.com). It is important to note that ISI uses Entryeeze as an online registration portal only. Once the event deadline passes, you will not be able
