Open Freestyle Category
For those of you who have not done ISI in the past 10 years, you may be surprised to learn that we have an Open Freestyle category that allows a U.S. Figure Skating participant to transition easily into ISI competitions. We have established an equivalency chart (found in the ISI Handbook) as reference for crossing over from U. S. Figure Skating. Tere is sometimes confusion, however, surrounding this chart. It does not mean that a skater simply slides into a level of their own choosing; the skater must skate at a minimal equivalency to their current U.S. Figure Skating Freestyle test level AND MUST take and pass the appropriate Open FS tests through ISI. Key point: there is no grandfathering in from one association to another. Te good news is that these Open FS tests are fairly generous with maneuver choices and all but Platinum can be administered by one ISI Professional member. Tis means that you, as a current ISI coach, can test your own skater. At the Platinum level, we do require three ISI coaches to pass the test.
If you are in a rink that does not have three coaches to meet that requirement, we allow a video test to be sent to the office to be judged.
While our national competitions are
lots of fun, with mascots, on-ice award ceremonies, surprise events and plenty of opportunities to pair up with friends, we also strive to have more competitive and exciting matchups. At a national event, it is not unusual to have groups of six to nine skaters, which are typically larger than what your skaters would see at a local event. In striving to keep things
fun and fair, however, we are careful to group our skaters in like skilled levels and ages. Tis is the biggest advantage of a national event since it pulls so many more skaters into the pool. It also brings people together from all over the country and the world.
We invite you and your skaters to
consider joining us and being a part of the excitement that is a national ISI competition!
