cannot express how much I appreciate the guidance, assistance, and support I have received from other AGC leaders, past and present, staff and so many members who have encouraged and helped me get here. Please let me also introduce the rest
Building on a Strong Foundation I
would like to start by saying how honored I am to serve as your 2019 AGC of California President. I
of your 2019 officer corps including Senior Vice President Mike Blach of Blach Construction; Vice President Dina Kimble of Royal Electric; Treasurer Steve Rule of Turner Construction Co.; our CEO Peter Tateishi; and Immediate Past President Walt Johnson of K.G. Walters Construction Co. A huge thank you to Walt for his unwavering leadership last year through not only some significant transi- tions but also the largest political endeavor our association has ever undertaken. Trough Walt’s leadership and
Peter’s vision, AGC of California played a major role in defeating Proposition 6 in November, ensuring over $5 billion in sustained transportation and transit funding annually for California. AGC of California directly contributed over $1 million. AGC of America added $250,000, and collectively, our members contributed over $8.5 million to this vital campaign. As an association and an industry, we should be proud of this enormous accomplishment. I think it just goes to prove that we are a proud and passionate group that steps up to challenges, works past obstacles and always gets the job done. I would like to build further on the
theme of passion and pride. You may have already heard talk about big plans for AGC of California’s upcoming centennial in 2020. While we will move forward preparing and positioning ourselves to thrive in our second hundred years, I think this is also an appropriate time to look back with pride on the strong foundation our association and its members have created over the last 99 years. Like many of you, I am a child of
construction. I grew up around this business, and I have had the good fortune to work for some great pillars of the

California highway- contracting world, such as Jack and Gene Yeager and AGC Past President Jeff Kasler. For as long as I can recall, my passion was to follow my father and be a bridge builder, and I am proud that every day I get to see that passion become reality. Whether highways, airports, schools, hospitals, pipelines or treatment plants, collectively we have been a part of creating some of the greatest structures in California. I know I’m not alone in feeling this pride for the work we do every day, and it’s time for us to celebrate those achievements and what they mean to the people of California. Just a few of the most recent notable projects built by AGC members are featured in this issue of California Constructor magazine, our annual Awards issue. We’ve all heard how construction has a
poor image and younger generations don’t think our industry is cool or hip, but we have also heard that this generation wants to be involved in giving back and taking part in something bigger than themselves. I cannot think of any better way to do that than building projects that will stand for generations, making life better for Californians. By celebrating what we do and proudly showcasing our people and projects, past and present, we not only pay proper respect to our 99-year history, but we just may be able to sway opinions and help attract our future workforce. In closing, let me state again how
proud and humbled I am to serve as your president and how excited I am for the coming year. I wish you all a happy, prosperous and safe new year and invite everyone to attend the State Board meetings and Officers’ Installation banquet on January 24-25 at the Disney Grand Californian Resort in Anaheim.
