Excellence in Project Management – Projects Over $15 Million Winner: Turner Construction Company for “Wilshire Grand Center” – Los Angeles
As the tallest building west of
the Mississippi, rising 1,100 feet over the city of Los Angeles, the new Wilshire Grand Center stands as testament to the latest engineering and construction approaches as well as the power of a highly collaborative project team. Turner Construction Company
coordinated closely with architect A. C. Martin Partners, numerous trade partners, the city of L.A. and others to deliver the 73-story, LEED Gold certified, mixed-use office and hotel tower in June of 2017. Te signature project incorporates several engineering and construction milestones, including being the first building in downtown LA that is a composite structure with a concrete core and structural steel and glass exterior. Turner leveraged the expertise of its design-assist trade partners to determine the structural system providing the greatest cost and schedule efficiencies, superior seismic stability and uninterrupted views. Te project kicked
off with the demolition of the existing 1.2-million-sq.-ft. Wilshire Grand Hotel, a complex endeavor due to its location in a densely populated area of downtown L.A. Below-grade demolition was further challenged by the presence of the operational MTA Subway Red Line running parallel to the site, just five feet from the property line. A massive 18.5-hour concrete
pour to lay the building’s foundation set a new Guinness World Record for the largest continuous foundation concrete pour. Te team met each critical
schedule milestone along the project’s five-year path. Crews followed an

aggressive vertical construction cycle that saw a new floor poured every four days, followed closely by the structural steel system work. Extensive use of prefabrication contributed to the overall schedule savings. Turner Construction ultimately
delivered a highly successful, iconic project that has redefined the Los Angeles skyline. Also selected as finalists in this
category were: Balfour Beatty Infra- structure, Inc. for “Reclamation District 2035 – Woodland Davis Clean Water Agency Joint Intake and Fish Screen” – West Sacramento; Kiewit/Manson, JV for “San Francisco
