2019 SAFETY AWARDS
Unique Safety Solution Employed by Skanska-Ames Team The Interstate 15 Express Lanes project added two express lanes
to Intestate 15 in both directions. It consisted of 15 miles of paving, six retaining walls, nine soundwalls and 11 bridge widenings and included the most significant bridge structure ever built over the Santa Ana River. Skanska-Ames, a Joint Venture, elected to use overhead gantry
cranes to significantly reduce exposure to safety, environmental and public impacts on the Interstate 15 Express Lanes project – an innovation safety application that netted the team the “unique safety award” in the AGC Construction Safety Excellence Awards competition. Construction of the one-third-mile-long Santa Ana River Bridge
consisted of 115 cast-in-steel shell piles supporting 12 pier walls, which in turn support 65 of the largest precast girders ever erected on a Caltrans structure. The largest of the girders are 176 feet long, weighing 265,000 pounds. Girders of this magnitude always have safety challenges, and the
particulars pertaining to this structure only increased the specific safety concerns. The project team elected to utilize two 40-ft.-tall and 60-ft.-wide Mi-Jack gantry cranes to construct the pier walls, place the large precast girders, and construct the bridge superstructure. The gantry cranes significantly reduced exposure to safety, environmental, and public impacts. They eliminated work to be performed behind K-rail and away from traffic, significantly reduced full freeway closures and lane closures and enabled work to be performed during the day rather than night.
