net growth was almost 33,000 less than in the previous 12 months. If that pattern persists for another

five years, the state could experience a drop in population. Even without an absolute decline, the deceleration implies slower growth in demand for housing, population-based nonresi- dential construction, and revenue for state and local agencies to fund public construction projects.

Te economies of many states depend in part on imports and exports, but California is particularly exposed, especially to trans-Pacific trade. Te steep tariffs that have been imposed on thousands of products, the retal- iatory measures adopted by U.S. trading partners and the constant uncertainty about future tariffs and trade restrictions have caused a wide variety of businesses to cancel or scale back investment decisions regarding structures as well as equipment and inventory. Te impacts range from the state’s huge agriculture and food processing

export businesses to transportation and logistics firms to the nation’s largest port complex. In addition, travel- and tourism-related firms and facilities that rely on foreign business and leisure travelers are vulnerable to overseas economic conditions that are worsened by trade barriers. Despite the headwinds caused by

departing workers and trade friction, California contractors have good reason to be optimistic about opportu- nities in 2020. Most project types and regions should post growth. 
