SAFETY AWARDS

Route 101 Project Wins High Hazard Award Myers & Sons Construction

overcame substantial challenges on a project that replaced nearly half a million square feet of deteriorating roadway, stretching over 26 miles, in one of the busiest transportation arteries in the U.S. Te Route 101 Calabasas Precast Panel Roadway Rehabilitation project received the “Safety on a High Hazard Project” award in AGC’s Construction Safety Excellence Awards competition. Te project serves as a vital

commercial transport and commuter artery and is the major coastal north- south route linking the Greater Los Angeles Area to Central and Northern California. Working closely with Caltrans, Myers & Sons incorporated a new construction methodology that uses precast reinforced concrete slabs installed over a 4-inch thick rapid set lean concrete base. To meet the challenges that naturally come with imple- menting new construction methods, the Caltrans/Myers team undertook a rapid start to safety partnership.

Tat led to development of best practice installation methods; early vetting of potential design challenges; effective management of the closely confined “across the barrier” work; and development and implementation of an Early Action Barrier System approach. Te project’s safety program

focused on limiting traffic flow impacts to this vital economic corridor and simplifying the method and efficiency of construction. Te team identified possible issues and benefits from reconfiguring the project’s designed 15-foot panel length to increase them up to 36 feet in length. Tis change netted significant safety benefits. For starters, larger panels equated to fewer panel placements in the field, which increased safety margins. It also reduced impacts to traffic volume by limiting the total number of closures and accelerated construction by allowing multiple panels of the same configuration to be laid out simultaneously.

Myers & Sons Shows Team Effort on Water Project Te Colorado River Aqueduct

(CRA) Sand Trap Infrastructure Reconstruction project leveraged technology, innovative techniques, strong communications and a safety plan tailored to the project’s unique demands. AGC of California awarded Myers & Sons Construction, LP the “Safety Effort of a Project Team” award for the project. Located at three separate sites

30 miles apart, the project required extensive command and coordi- nation to ensure safe construction on the project built for Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California. Te project involved critical infrastructure and safety improvements for the Colorado River Aqueduct’s upgraded master plan, supporting a system that delivers water to millions

Myers & Sons crews at work on the Route 101 Calabasas Precast Panel Roadway Rehabilitation project

Te Caltrans/Myers team held

safety and Job Hazard Analysis meetings on a daily basis, involving field managers, subcontractors and key craft foremen. Tey created “call trees” to communicate schedule and production issues, managed schedule changes through daily foreman “play of the day” meetings, and managed multiple lane closures to achieve “early open” safety goals. In pioneering a new methodology

for roadway infrastructure rehabili- tation, the project team leveraged every aspect of safety implementation to achieve a successful project.

of residents in the region. Te Myers & Sons team engaged

in extensive, partnered preconstruction planning in order to safely deliver the accelerated project within tight, critical shutdown periods. To achieve a goal of zero accidents,

zero recordables and zero OSHA viola- tions on the job, the team identified key action items early on that were

critical to success. Among them:  Effective and active communi- cation of expectations, performance and improvement;

 Comprehensive job and task specific training;

 A method for accountability; and  Developing an environment of

empowerment in which every member of the team understood the importance of safety in every

task performed. Te team’s safety efforts catalyzed

around the use of Myers Safe & Sound® Environmental Safety and Health Program. Tey also employed the Safety Mojo® platform to monitor the health and safety performance of employees and subcontractors at every level, throughout the project. 
