CONSTRUCTOR AWARDS project. Te contract involved work around

live track, requiring extensive coordi- nation with Caltrain operations. All work within 15 feet of the track was subject to various restrictions and tight timelines. Te project team devised solutions

that saved money and allowed work to be performed within the tight timeline of a single full rail outage rather than two separate rail outages as originally envisioned. Tis saved both client and contractor resources and minimized impacts to the traveling public by eliminating an entire weekend from the project schedule. Also selected as finalist in this category

shift durations in order to install the new system in a manner that did not interfere with the existing emergency phone system. All contract work took place during night shifts in order to not impact MUNI patrons during rush hour. Work within the MUNI tunnel had to be done during non-revenue service hours or specific shutdown periods. Access was difficult, and work had

to be planned to keep the public safe while balancing construction produc- tivity. Te owner issued a change that combined two formerly separate shutdown windows into a continuous 150-day shutdown. Shimmick worked diligently to rotate and provide rest for field crews to mitigate worker fatigue so the project could be completed safely and efficiently without impacting MUNI’s services. Shimmick delivered several

innovative solutions to improve worker safety and efficiency. For example, they utilized a dual drill press machine that could drill two holes at once. By improving the ergonomics of the drilling action, the drill press machine prevented injuries, improved
