Meeting the Challenge of the Difficult Job – Specialty Contractor $10 Million or Below Constructor Winner: Royal
Electric Company for “Folsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway Control Structure” – Folsom It isn’t every day that you get to
help build an engineering marvel in your own backyard. But that was the opportunity Royal Electric Company had when it won a $4.3 million subcontract with longtime customer, Granite Construction Co., to provide the electrical, low voltage and life safety systems for the Folsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway project in Folsom, CA. As part of a $900
million effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, Royal’s subcontract required extensive coordi- nation, preplanning
and attention to detail. Deliverables included power, lighting and control wiring for the structure and Tainter Gates, plus fire alarm, voice evacu- ation and DAS System for cell service throughout the structure. Te project represented a
partnership between Granite Construction and Royal Electric Company from the start. Extensive coordination for detailing of systems, sequencing of work, adherence to safety protocols, and maintenance of temporary power and lighting for construction required constant communi- cation.
Te project’s sequencing challenge
was enhanced by a change to the design, which had originally called for five monoliths of concrete, each about 150-ft. tall. Due to unforeseen loose granite, a sixth monolith of 30 feet was added.
Access to electrical gear posed
another issue for the team, due to the fact that the main electrical equipment for the spillway was housed in the mechanical gallery about 100 feet up from the bottom of the spillway. Supplying temporary power
