he Centennial History of the ARP Church gives a brief sketch of Rev.


Joseph McCreary. He was born in 1812 in the Cedar Springs community of Abbeville county, SC. After attend- ing school in Abbeville, he wanted to go to college. Several people from the community were moving to Ohio.


They would have used wagons to transport their possessions. McCrea- ry joined them, sometimes helping the drivers, but mostly walking to his destination of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. That would have been at least 400 miles from his home. At college, he did well, and was nicknamed, “the philosopher” by his classmates. After graduating from Miami University in 1834, he enrolled at the Associate Reformed Seminary in Allegheny, PA. (Erskine was not chartered until 1839.) Upon completing his theological studies, McCreary was licensed to preach by Second Presbytery in 1836. His first work in ministry followed a pattern of that time: he accompanied Rev.


James Clark Chalmers on “mission- ary journeys” to communities in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Indi- ana. These mission journeys were to explore the potential for establishing churches in those areas. Remember that there were no automobiles, no interstate highways.
