Where’d That Phrase Come From?

Trench coat

Once again, our vocabulary leads us to the fields of war. Today, a trench coat calls to mind any number of images: an average Joe standing in the rain, a gangster, a spy, a high-powered executive.

But the trench coat, in its original visage, was designed for soldiers.

In 1879, renowned clothing designer Thomas Burberry created a tightly woven fabric known as gabardine, which proved quite useful at keeping a person dry in wet weather. In 1901, he submitted his design to England’s War Office for a body-length coat that was just as dry but lighter than the great coats worn by British troops.

The coat first saw widespread

usage

during World War I, in which trench tactics were employed on both sides of the conflict. In time, the garb and the tactic merged into what we now call a “trench coat.”

KATEY’S KORNER by Katey Powell

I hope you had a good summer despite Covid. Once again this summer was plentiful with fresh local veggies and fruits. We still see some of them growing! I started a garden this year and loved stepping outside to pick fresh tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, tomatias, and tons of herbs! But hey – if you did not start a garden and still want to YOU STILL CAN! Brown thumb mama lists 15 different veggies that you can plant in September! https:// brownthumbmama.com/vegetables- plant-september

I challenge you to pick one! You can even start with a container garden. You’ll love the feeling of picking it fresh from your own back yard. I am going to clean out my garden, add some new compost, and try my hand at beets, broccoli, and kale!

It is so cool how God provides the needed produce for the needed season. Think about it – the veggies and fruits that grow in the summer have lots of water/liquid to them like cucumbers and watermelon! It is just what our bodies need due to the heat. Now we move onto the root veggies in the fall like beets, sweet potatoes, & cabbage! These give us the hardy nutrients we need for the upcoming winter season.

Stir-frys work in ANY season. I love a good stir fry when I’m not sure what to make for dinner but have a lot of veggies on hand. Every stir fry has to have a good sauce – you can make your own or keep a bottled one in the cupboard. Then, cooking time starts with your protein, if desired (chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu), next sauté whatever veggies you have, add some good staples like onions, garlic and ginger, and serve over rice or noodles. Stir-frys are a yummy meal and can incorporate any and all veggies that you have on hand. You really can’t go wrong! However, do remember to add those hardy veggies first (or you can blanch them for faster cooking) and then add the lighter veggies last as they won’t need as much time. My most recent stir fry included broccoli, carrots, zucchini, onions and garlic served over some brown rice noodles!

Try this recipe below but know that you can make it your own by using your favorite veggies. And I dare you to throw in some new ones! Happy Fall - Happy Stir-Fry!
