News In Brief

Julia Hardeman Rhodes Award J

By Brent Turner

ulia Hardeman Rhodes was born in 1875 in Louisville, GA. She attended the Lousiville ARP Church there and wanted to see the church reach out to Lou- isville and beyond. Her love and passion for Jesus was evident to all. Julia

Rhodes started a Boarding house early in her life and spent her lifetime caring for others. When she was 30 years old she went to the elders in her church and asked if a women’s ministry could be formed to help serve in the church and community. The women’s group grew and so did the church. The Louisville Women’s group

began to impact the community and started reaching out to the ARP denomina- tion as a whole. Missionaries were soon being supported by the church and the women’s group began to make an impact denominationally. Julia Rhodes soon began writing the ARP bulletin where others in the denomination could learn about women’s work, what others were studying, missions and more. This would be the beginning of what we now know as the ARP Magazine. Julia Rhodes died in 1942 at the age of 66. She will be remembered as a “Woman

of Vision”. A woman who was passionately serving the Lord and wanted to make a difference in her church, her community, her denomination and beyond. Around 15 years ago a group of women from the Louisville ARP Church felt it was time to honor the work of Julia H. Rhodes. They felt an award would be appropriate for someone who showed the same passion for Jesus and service to their church and beyond. The board of Christian Education Ministries with the ARP Women’s Min- istries takes nominations for this award and presents a winner every year. This year the Julia Hardeman Rhodes Award was given to Mrs. Gail Fowler.

Gail has served in the Fayetteville ARP Church faithfully for many years. She has served as youth director since 1999.

In 2005 she also took on the role of

church secretary. Gail has served on the board of Christian Education Ministries for our ARP De- nomination. Here she served on the Executive Committee and was Chairman of the Events committee. Her hard work and dedication to Christian Education was evident to all in her time serving on the board. Gail has also led numerous mission trips for her church and brought the youth

of her church to Horizon, Quest and Appalachia. She served on the planning team for Horizon and Quest for many years as well.?

“Gail’s words of wisdom have taught

the youth of Fayetteville ARP church for over 20 years. She is a hard worker and has served her church well not only as an employee but as a member as well. Gail loves children but most importantly she loves God and His people. And she serves them well.”

Donna Sumners, member of Fayetteville ARP “Gail takes every opportunity to sup-

port and strengthen the youth as they plan and teach VBS lessons at Appalachia. Her expertise with teaching Bible to kids of all ages is invaluable. She helps the youth understand how to teach a lesson and more importantly, how to share their faith and the Gospel with the kdis who come to VBS. Gail sets such a good example of how to live out your faith in front of oth- ers. I am honored to have worked with her and to call her a friend.”

Sara Lewandowski, member of Greenville ARP Church

“Gail has a strong faith in the Lord,

and readily shares her faith in word and deed. It’s that vibrant faith that’s being refined in fire in this season of her life.”

Rev. Calvin Todd, former pastor of Fayette- ville ARP Church for 25 years

“I have personally known Gail for

some time. She is one of my heroes. Her love for youth ministry and passion to share the love of Christ is contagious.”
