Christmas Promise!

Christmas Promise!

By Rev. Kent Moorlach O

ne of the persistent hopes of Christmas is that something ‘extra special’ will happen to make it a memorable holiday! As children, we thought it might come as an ultimate gift that would make us happy. As young people, we thought it might be the gift that we gave to someone else so they would know how much we appreciated them. As we age, we long to see our loved ones experience true joys and blessings – especially those connected to life’s precious gifts of family and country. The best Christmases are the ones when we sense the

promises of ‘peace on earth’ and ‘joy to the world’ are more than just carol lyrics.

But go back a few thousand years; when living in the land of Israel was more than a struggle. Foreign invad- ers ruled the land, the culture was increasingly becoming pagan and the government dictated mandatory travel to the location of family ancestry. Add to that some hastily arranged wedding plans and an unexpected child on the  Enter a baby! Despite all the turmoil of their day and life, Mary and Joseph were being moved by providential cir- cumstances in order to bring about the redemption of the world! This baby would bring peace, joy, hope, and truth to the world. They didn’t know it yet, but when they re- visited the Scriptures (and of course, were visited by a few angels, shepherds, and Wise men), Mary and Joseph could once again recognize the reasons behind their trials.          many subsequent observances will never compare to the hope of the promises that we have in Christ. But the prom- ise persists because one day, on a Great Day, our obser- vance will become the reality of all that God has promised to those who love Him. Never let go of that promise!

Rev. Kent Moorlach is the pastor of Richland ARP Church in Millington, TN. This was originally printed in the December 2013 newsletter.
