IN MEMORIAM DR. ROGER JAMES ODENWELLER
Dr. Roger James Odenweller, DVM, MPVM, (November 3, 1939 - March 19, 2023), son of Tomas and Beatrice Odenweller, grew up in Delphos, Ohio, and attended St.
John’s elementary and high schools. After attending Dayton University for two years, he transferred to Te Ohio State University and received his DVM degree. He practiced small animal medicine in Providence, Rhode Island, before joining the army in 1968 and serving in Vietnam as a captain in the Veterinary Corps.
In 1970 Dr. Odenweller began practicing veterinary medicine in Delphos and Van Wert, Ohio, joining the practice his grandfather, Dr. Frank Young, had started in the early 1900s. In 1973, he married Deloris Hart Odenweller. Shortly after, he began work for the USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services in Lexington, Ken- tucky. After receiving an MPVM degree from UC Davis, California, he began work in Frankfort but chose to live in Shelbyville. Except for three years as Area Veterinarian in Charge of West Virginia, his family has lived in Shelbyville for 45 years. He served on the Parks Board and the board of Shelbyville Country Club.
Dr. Odenweller retired from the USDA in 2005. He loved golfing and playing cards with his buddies. In the past few years, he also enjoyed playing pickleball and golf with his Florida friends. Preceding him in death were his parents (Tom and Bea), his sister (Susan Von Lehmden), and his brother (Richard Oden- weller). He leaves behind his wife, Deloris, his two sons, Matthew James and Patrick Hart (Sheena), his two grandsons, Lincoln Hart and Maddox Cooper, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
