BUZZWORDS (CONT.)

I would encourage any of those working with new grad- uates, to clarify what your personal strengths are. Allow us to see where you feel you could improve and ask us to share the same perspective on ourselves. Discuss what you are excited to teach so that a student who is search- ing might find you and learn. Have an open discussion on your mentoring style and to what extent you plan on involving yourself in their path to success. Allow them to present some ideas on how that might be applied to their learning style and what they might want to focus on. Ten follow through. I have already said there is no right way to mentor, but I think the biggest mistake is to have no plan at all, and to never clarify expectations on both sides. Please, take the time to define your unique mentor- ship abilities, and see where it might lead.

To the younger graduates and my fellow classmates, what are we without our own faults and strengths? We are trained to advocate endlessly for our patients, speaking to clients as well as colleagues with the purpose of patient care at the forefront of our decisions. Why do we falter when we must do the same for our own abilities? Te true importance of fighting for your own needs can only be known individually but can still be approached with team mentality. Te responsibility to ensure your education so that you can continue working at your best and reach your goals can and should be taken as seriously as deciding on patient care. Don’t allow mentorship to be a buzzword or a passing thought, put it at the top of your list and see what opportunities come from it. 
